As #volunteersweek 2020 gets underway Cadent Director of Customer Strategy Mark Belmega shares exciting news about how we're helping our employees playing their part:

Volunteering goes above and beyond our regulatory commitments; it’s not just about being responsible, it’s about being a good business and making a real and sustainable difference to the communities we support. And right now, more than ever, the additional efforts of our colleagues are vitally needed as the UK deals with the COVID-19 pandemic.

To help with this, we recently enhanced our employee volunteering allowances to give colleagues up to two days per month (paid leave) to support our communities. We initially rolled this out for April and May and have now extended this for a further two months into June and July. Also, through our regional Networks, we are encouraging individuals to consider how they could help customers in vulnerable situations whilst they are working in, or close to, their properties, with tasks such as picking up a prescription or going to the local shop for essential supplies.

Our volunteering doesn’t just stop once the COVID-19 pandemic ends. From April 1st 2021 we’ve made a commitment as part of the RIIO-2 business plan that during the five years from 2021-2026 at least 60% of Cadent employees will volunteer for at least one day to support a community scheme. We are close to signing a deal with a high-quality volunteering provider to help us to identify schemes and support colleagues in their volunteering efforts.

I think we can all be proud of the additional support our colleagues have been providing to their local communities, in addition to continuing to provide outstanding customer experiences every single day. This #volunteersweek gives us the opportunity to showcase our efforts and say thank you to our colleagues for their immense efforts.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.

Cadent manages the national gas emergency service free phone line on behalf of the gas industry - 0800 111 999*
