After almost two weeks of varying gas pressure in the Gamlingay area, Cadent are pleased to confirm that the issue has now been resolved.

Daniel Ridlington, Head of Customer Operations for Cadent in the East of England, said: “I want to thank residents in Gamlingay for their patience while this issue was rectified. I know it has been far from ideal, but we really appreciate your understanding throughout.

“This has been an extremely complex job which has required a great deal of investigatory work to locate the issue. Our team discovered that the fault stemmed from a pipe underneath a field in Everton where not enough gas was able to pass through when demand was high.

“On Thursday our teams carried out a bypass around the fault with a permanent fix carried out today. Pressure levels have now returned to those that we would normally expect to see across our network.

“Once again, I’d like to thank residents for their patience as well as the local councils, Gamlingay Eco-Hub and the Red Cross for their support throughout.

“While this issue has been resolved, it serves as a timely reminder of the importance of acting quickly if you smell gas or notice damage to gas pipes. If this happens, call the gas emergency service immediately on 0800 111 999*. It is a good idea to save the number into your phone, so it is there if you ever need it.”

As work continues to restore full gas pressure in the Gamlingay area, Daniel Ridlington, Head of Customer Operations for Cadent in the East of England, wanted to share an update on the work that has taken place and what is still ongoing.

“First and foremost, I want to thank residents who have been affected by the reduction of pressure over the past week and a half. By reporting the loss of pressure, we have been able to pinpoint where the issue has stemmed from and are able to carry out the necessary repairs.

“Our investigation led to an issue with a pipe on the outskirts of Gamlingay that we believe caused the significant drop in pressure at peak usage time. Unfortunately, this is not a quick fix, but we have engineers working tirelessly to resolve this issue.

“Our customer team have distributed letters to residents to keep them updated on what has been happening and I’d like to thank the parish council for their support in keeping residents informed. We will also update the news page on the Cadent website with relevant updates once information is available.

“As we have been able to maintain the gas supply, there has been no additional welfare measures issued to those on the Priority Service Register at this time. However, we will, of course, continue to review this on a day-by-day basis and provide support if necessary.

“Again, I’d like to thank everyone for their patience as we deal with this situation, and I will provide a further update in due course.”

If you smell gas, do not assume it is related to this work. Act immediately and call the national gas emergency service on 0800 111 999, day or night. All calls are recorded and may be monitored.

Engineers from Cadent, the UK’s Largest gas distribution network, are currently working in the village of Gamlingay, Cambridgeshire, following reports of low gas pressures in the local network during peak usage times – mainly in the morning and evening.

Following a number of calls to the gas emergency number over the weekend, engineers have been in regular contact with customers to ensure that gas remains flowing into their homes – albeit reduced from the normal service.

Our repair teams are also carrying out investigation work to establish exactly what has caused the reduction in gas pressure during peak times and will make appropriate repairs.

Daniel Ridlington, Head of Customer Operations for Cadent, said: “While this incident appears to be affecting only a small number of residents in Gamlingay, we understand how frustrating it is to have such a reduced service during the current cold spell.

“I’d like to reassure all residents that every effort is being made to pinpoint the cause of this issue. The gas pipe that serves Gamlingay runs underneath numerous agricultural fields and into the village. Our engineers are carrying out investigation work to pinpont exactly where the issue stems from before we can begin to make the appropriate repairs. Unfortunately, this isn’t a simple process, but we are working as safely and as quickly as we can to resolve this problem.

“I completely sympathise with residents who have been affected by this issue and thank everyone for their patience and understanding as we continue our work.”

If you smell gas, do not assume it is related to this work. Act immediately and call the national gas emergency service on 0800 111 999, day or night. All calls are recorded and may be monitored.

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy. We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change. Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency. Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

    Future of Gas:

Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
