    Working safely near our assets

If you’re planning to do work in the vicinity of Cadent assets, please submit an enquiry on LinesearchbeforeUdig (LSBUD) for an instant risk-based response to your enquiry which will provide you with a copy of our asset plans along with our Specification for Safe Working in the Vicinity of Cadent assets.

Are you a solicitor or conveyancing company looking for conveyancing information on our assets? LSBUD’s enquiry service will be able to provide this by submitting an Information Only Enquiry and selecting the Property Conveyance work category.

We want anyone working near our pipes to be safe. Any damage to a gas asset or its coating can affect its integrity, potentially resulting in failure and severe consequences for individuals in the vicinity.

    Information you'll need

You must give us as much information as possible when submitting information associated with your works, and it is vital that this information is accurate.

Take the time to check you have selected the correct enquiry type, work category and work type, ensuring that you appropriately mark out your area of works, including any access routes. If this information is incorrect, it will affect the outcome of our assessment.

    Assessing your enquiry

LSBUD will auto-generate a response based on your enquiry details and our assets in the area. The assessment will be based on the selected enquiry type, work category and work type assessed against our assets in the area.

If your response says that we need to assess your enquiry further, you must not start any work until we confirm it is safe.

If you are advised to proceed with caution, then you must ensure that you utilise the provided asset plans and follow the guidance contained in our Specification for Safe Working.

In addition to the guidance in our Specification for Safe Working, you must observe any site-specific advice provided by our specialist operational plant protection teams.

If your planned activities are to be carried out within the distances specified in this Specification for Safe Working, you must obtain site-specific advice from our specialist operational plant protection team.

If your works are being carried out in an easement, please ensure that you contact us to obtain formal, signed written consent, which will only be provided after consultation with our plant protection team. This auto-generated response does not constitute any formal agreement or consent for any proposed development work, either generally or related to Cadent’s easements or other rights.

    Before your work starts

Before you start works please ensure:

    • You have full colour plans, generated within the last 28 days of where our gas pipes are, available on site.
    • Our asset records are consulted to establish the indicative location of the gas assets relative to your works and, in line with our Specification for Safe Working, verify and establish the actual position of gas mains, pipes, services and other apparatus on site before any activities are undertaken.

Remember: If the marked-out area is incorrect you MUST resubmit your enquiry with the correct area marked out.

    • That you contact the landowner and ensure any proposed works in private land do not infringe on Cadent’s legal rights (i.e. easements or other rights).
    • That all persons, including direct labour and contractors, working for you on or near Cadent apparatus follow the requirements of the HSE Guidance Notes HSG47 ‘Avoiding danger from underground services’.
    safety

    During your works

Before you start works please ensure:

    • Comply with all guidance and any further guidance from our specialist team following assessment.
    • Ensure that access to Cadent apparatus is maintained at all times.
    • Prevent the placing of heavy construction plant, equipment, materials or the passage of heavy vehicles over Cadent apparatus unless specifically agreed with us in advance.
    • Not carry out excavation in the vicinity of a high or intermediate pressure pipeline without our supervision
    • Exercise extreme caution if slab (mass) concrete is encountered during excavation works as this may be protecting or supporting Cadent apparatus.
    • Maintain appropriate clearances between gas apparatus and the position of other buried plant.

Remember: If your plans change please let us know as soon as possible so we can work with you to find a solution.
