Essential work on a gas pipeline will require the overnight closure of an entry road to the Queensway (Birkenhead) Tunnel for three nights.
Cadent, which manages the network that distributes gas to heat local homes, needs to gain access to a pipeline under Birkenhead’s Borough Road flyover.
After discussions with various agencies, it has been agreed to carry out this work over three nights, Monday 13 to Wednesday 15 January.
The flyover will be closed from 8pm until 5.50am. The other access roads to the tunnel remain open.
This impacts Liverpool-bound traffic only.
Rachel Endfield, Customer Operations Area Manager for Cadent, said: “While this is essential work, we want to cause the least amount of disruption.
“We will be working overnight, making sure the flyover is open again for the busy morning ‘rush-hour’ periods.
“As most people will know, there are several ways to access the entrance to the tunnel and these will be signposted while the flyover is closed over the three nights.
“I would also like to reassure our customers that this work will not impact gas supply – gas stays on throughout the work, so please don’t be worried about that.”
Cadent manages the network of underground pipes which distribute gas to heat millions of homes, as well as schools, hospitals, offices and other buildings. It also provides the region’s 24/7, year-round gas emergency service.
