A project to install essential gas equipment deep under Kings Road, Stretford, Manchester, is set to get underway on Monday 6th November.

Cadent, which manages the local gas distribution network, has had to act to make sure there is a safe network in place to deliver enough gas to the local area.

The underground gas network carries gas into buildings, where it provides warmth in winter, hot water, and fuel for cooking.

Recent works in the area have revealed that the ageing gas main – which has been in place for more than 90 years – is showing signs of corrosion and needs to be replaced.

This means that Cadent’s teams will need to dig a deep and wide excavation in Kings Road to access the main and associated pipework.

As a result, a road closure will need to be put in place along with diversions for all road users in the area.

Starting on Monday, Kings Road will be closed at the junction with Royston Road, across the tram line bridge and to the junctions of Skerton Road and Basford Road. Pedestrians will still be able to access the footpaths while cyclists will be asked to dismount.

“We’re carrying out this work to keep gas safely flowing into all the local buildings in the area,” explained Mark Syers, Cadent’s Head of Investment Planning (North West).

“We have carried out extensive work in the area already, but repair is not an option in this instance and a replacement needs to take place.

“We would like to thank customers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience experienced as we complete this important work.”

Despite the large project taking place, we plan for the gas supply to remain uninterrupted to homes and businesses in the area.

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy. We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change. Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency. Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

    Future of Gas:

Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
