Great Britain’s gas and electricity networks are at the beating heart of Britain’s energy system with the gas networks playing a vital role in delivering reliable energy and powering industry, while keeping homes and businesses safe and warm, through an underground network of around 300,000km of pipes.

As organisations at the core of the energy transition, we understand that delivering net zero means change for virtually every energy user across the country. To meet this challenge we must evolve within the changing energy landscape and, to best represent national interests, as gas networks we need to focus our delivery activity more clearly. As part of that commitment, today we are setting out our future plan to operate outside of the existing trade association, the Energy Networks Association (ENA).

The ENA has served Great Britain’s gas networks well for several years, delivering industry-leading programmes including Gas Goes Green which has advanced the discussion about the role of biomethane and hydrogen in the decarbonisation of heat. However, the size and scale of the energy transition now requires us to move away from the status quo so that we can focus our transformation activity to expedite the transition to net zero for our customers.

We would like to thank the ENA for its support and hard work in representing the voice of the energy networks. We look forward to continuing to work together over the next 12 months to deliver a smooth transition, while building on our collaborative work with industry partners to advance the energy transition and deliver on the UK government’s bold ambitions for a net zero future.

    Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy. We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change. Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency. Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

    Future of Gas:

Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
