    Update: Thursday 6 June 2024

Gas emergency work is progressing well along Cockspur Street in London.  Unfortunately, we have found some gas escapes on a section of pipe and the emergency engineers are working around the clock to repair the escapes as safely and quickly as possible.  Due to the complexity of the work and the size of pipe, the work is not expected to be fully completed until early next week. The lane closure of Cockspur Street from Trafalgar Square to Pall Mall will remain in place for the duration of the work.

Traffic advice: We would advise that traffic doesn’t try to use Cockspur Street to cross over to Pall Mall East to access Suffolk Street if possible.  This has been seen to cause more congestion and delays to traffic in the area.

These emergency works are essential to keep people safe and ensure gas supplies are not interrupted to the local area.  We appreciate that any road works cause some inconvenience, but we ask for people’s patience and understanding whilst this emergency work is completed.

We are working 24hours a day to complete the work adn reduce disruption as much as possible.

    04/06/2024

From 8pm this evening (04/06/2024) gas emergency service, Cadent will be putting an emergency road closure in place on Cockspur Street from the junction of Trafalgar Square and Pall Mall.

The road closure is needed due to a gas escape along this street, and the nature of the emergency work, width of the road and to ensure the safety of road users, pedestrians and engineers.

Emergency engineers will be working throughout the night and into tomorrow, to locate the gas escape and complete the repair.  At this time, we are unable to confirm when the work will be completed and when the road will reopen.

A diversion is in place and people are advised to leave more time to travel around this area or avoid if possible.

    Diversion
There is no left hand turn into Cockspur Street from Trafalgar Square and you will not be able to access Cockspur Street from Pall Mall.  The diversion will take traffic along Charing Cross Road (A400) to Shaftesbury Avenue and Haymarket.

    Future of Gas:

Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
