Elf-y Event: Cadent employees brighten bleak mid Covid winter with fundraising fun

Cadent employees bust the bleak midwinter blues with Elf Day
Event raising funds for Alzheimer’s Society with donations quadrupled thanks to Cadent matched giving scheme
Coronavirus restrictions have robbed those living with dementia of usual family, community and support networks

Amid a bleak midwinter of tiers, social distancing and tough restrictions Cadent employees have done their part in bringing cheer and comfort to those living with dementia by participating in Elf Day.

This Tuesday (December 8) is Elf Day which has become an annual fixture for Cadent employees who each year don funky Christmas sweaters and their finest elf attire to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Society, Cadent’s official charity.

This year the Government’s tier systems, lockdowns, social distancing rules and other restrictions have hit those living with dementia, particularly hard, robbing them of the usual family, community and support networks they rely on for support. With many staff still working from home and those in offices negotiating social distancing guidelines, this year’s Elf Day has been somewhat different to the norm, but creative ideas about how to celebrate the event have sprouted up.

Employees working from home have been encouraged to dress up as elves and dig out Christmas sweaters. There have also been online games, quizzes, elf-inspired Teams meetings and prizes for those employees with the best costumes and festive sweaters. Some employees have also marked the occasion by being festive heroes and carrying out ‘elf-less’ acts of kindness

Cadent Social Responsibility Specialist Laura Barnes said: “2020 has been a tough year for everyone. But coronavirus and the sweeping restrictions which have accompanied it have cut those living with dementia off from their families, communities and the usual support networks they rely on.

“We were therefore determined that Elf Day should not be cancelled and that we would do what we could to raise both good cheer and funds to help those living with dementia.”

Money raised by staff through Elf Day will also benefit from a generous Cadent pledge to quadruple all employee donations to Alzheimer’s Society, as well as any other UK registered charity, meaning for every pound donated Cadent will donate four pounds!
The quadruple giving pledge covers donations made between October 1st and December 31, 2020. And so far since the extra funding boost was introduced over £13,000 has been donated to UK charities with 24 more days left to claim.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
