On Tuesday (17 November) National Grid will be illuminating part of its Grade Two Listed Moore Street electricity substation in purple neon to mark World Prematurity Day.
National Grid is backing Sheffield Hospitals Charity’s World Prematurity Day event in the Peace Gardens, from 4pm-6pm on Tuesday. The free event will see the water cascades and lights of the Gardens, the National Grid substation, Barkers Pool and the DLA Piper offices turned purple to show their support for premature babies and those who look after them.
Families whose babies have been cared for in Jessop Wing Neonatal Intensive Care Unit are being invited to join in. Senior neonatal staff will be on hand to talk to the public, there will be music from the Voices of Jessop Wing+Choir and an appearance by Frozen stars Elsa and Anna.
National Grid Team Leader Malcolm Davies said: “Moore Street Substation plays an important role in providing safe and reliable electricity supplies to the people of Sheffield and we are keen to support the communities in which we operate.
“We are delighted to be able to show our support for premature babies and the specialists who look after them, including the fantastic work carried out by the Jessop Wing.”
Every year 700 premature and sick babies are admitted to Jessop Wing’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Sheffield Hospitals Charity, the official NHS charity for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is running a public appeal to raise £120,000 to pay for the renovation of four flats to become family accommodation to enable families to stay close by when their babies are being treated at the Unit.
National Grid’s Moore Street Substation was awarded Grade Two listed building status in 2013. Since 2010 the company has been floodlighting the building at night in striking red, blue and yellow to celebrate its design merit and highlight the building as a gateway to Sheffield.
National Grid worked with Sheffield City Council on the lighting project which was designed to create an artistic and dramatic focal point on the city’s ring road.
