- Ageing gas mains to be replaced with tough new pipes in Cannon Street

- New pipes will last over 80 years helping keep Londoners connected to safe and reliable gas supplies until the dawn of the 22nd century
Cadent is preparing to embark on a major project to replace ageing gas mains in Cannon Street in the heart of the City of London.
The essential project – designed to ensure the local area keeps on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies– involves replacing two gas pipes in Cannon Street between the junctions with Queen Victoria Street and King William Street.
Work has been scheduled to start on Monday 1 April and the project is due to be completed in December 2019. The pipes being replaced are located deep underground and to enable the work to be carried out safely Cannon Street will need to be closed for the duration of the project.
From 8pm on Sunday 31 March 2019 signed diversions will be in place. Access for emergency vehicles, residents and businesses, including deliveries, will be maintained. All bus stops on the closed section of Cannon Street will be suspended for the duration of the project with buses following the diversion route. Two diversions will be in place for the duration of the project. There will be a westbound diversion via Gracechurch Street, Bishopsgate, Wormwood Street, London Wall and St Martin’s-le-Grand. Eastbound traffic will be diverted via Bank Junction which will be partially reopened eastbound from Queen Victoria Street to Threadneedle Street and King William Street only, all other traffic restrictions at Bank will remain in place.
Local shops and businesses will remain open as usual throughout the project with access maintained for pedestrians.
Cadent Authorising Engineer Michael Morris said: “This work will help ensure the City of London continues to enjoy a first rate gas network for many decades to come. Safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating will be maintained in the area and the number of disruptive unplanned repair jobs required on ageing gas mains will be cut.”
Work has been planned in close discussion with the City of London.
