Gas mains upgrade in the pipeline for Wolverhampton

in your area

  • Older gas mains to be replaced with plastic pipe
  • Lane closure necessary in Bell Street and temporary diversion route needed for lorries

Thursday (9 March) will see the start of a gas mains upgrade in the centre of Wolverhampton, that will keep the gas flowing to local residents until the end of the century.

National Grid will be renewing gas pipes in Bell Street where it meets Cleveland Street. The upgrade is due to take five weeks.

This vital work is being carried out because the older gas mains have reached the end of their working lives and need to be renewed. They will be replaced by new hard-wearing plastic pipe which, once in the ground, will last for several generations and will need little or no maintenance.

To carry out the work safely there will be a lane closure in Bell Street. Cars can still turn left at the end of Bell Street.  However, lorries will only be able to turn right and will have a signed temporary diversion to follow.

Steve Murray, National Grid’s head of contract, said: “This vital work will ensure that local people continue to benefit from safe and reliable gas supplies for many years into the future.

“We’re sorry for any inconvenience the work may cause. We’ll make every effort to complete this essential project as soon as possible.”

It will be business as usual for local shops.

For any enquiries about this work people should contact National Grid’s customer services team on 0800 096 5678.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
