Leyland compressed natural gas (CNG) filling station
We believe that gas should be the fuel of choice for HGVs and buses in the UK to support UK CO2 reductions and cleaner air in our cities.
HGVs account for 15 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions from UK transport. A strategic switch from diesel to gas will have a significant impact on UK Government’s commitment to reduce emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.
In partnership with CNG Fuels, we invested in the first commercial high-pressure CNG refuelling station. The facility is connected to our high-pressure local transmission system at Leyland, Lancashire, and has been operating since March 2016.
Although the UK currently has CNG stations drawing natural gas from the medium (75 mbar to 2 bar) and intermediate (2 to 7 bar) pressure pipelines, this is first station to realise the further benefits from connecting directly to the high (30 bar) pressure pipeline. Connecting directly to the high pressure pipeline means less energy is needed to compress the gas for use as fuel.
