Our North London Head of Asset Management, Tara Moloney discovers a shared legacy, securing funding for a project that her own father, Tony Moloney worked on 30 years ago.
This incredible connection was realised when Tara’s family got together for a video night using the VHS video player. They spent the evening watching old footage of holidays, Christmases and birthdays, when an unexpected tape labelled ‘Monck Street’ at the bottom of the box was uncovered.
The name immediately caught my attention, as the North London delivery team were actively working on that governor as part of the wider London Medium Pressure Programme, renewing mains and governors across the network from RIIO2 into RIIO4.
When Tara asked her Dad, Tony, about it he explained that it was actually his first project after joining British Gas in July 1990, with a tight deadline to have it commissioned before Christmas that year.
I had no idea he had worked on it. Watching the original installation footage was incredible, and I was genuinely taken aback by the coincidence that the team I am in is now back there more than 30 years later; I guess the original held up pretty well!
Tara’s role involves determining and securing funding for investment across North London network assets, including the delivery of major investment projects that have been agreed with Ofgem for the regulatory period; the London Medium Pressure programme is one of these. Operational delivery of the programme is with the Investment Delivery team and we work closely to ensure its completion against safety and regulatory outcomes. To now be part of something that was commissioned by her father is a proud, full circle moment.
It’s incredibly meaningful. It feels like being part of a shared legacy, something that connects us in a very unique way. We often find ourselves deep in conversation about our respective roles, people we have come across, how the industry has evolved, and what the future holds.
Growing up, Tara was always eager to learn about her father’s role, managing the replacement of pipes across London. He spent many years in London operations before moving into HR, where he led Learning and Development.
One of his proudest achievements was helping to establish the Eakring training centre, delivering both gas and electricity training programmes during our National Grid days, including installing a live training pressure reduction station.
Looking back, it’s clear how much passion he had for the industry, and how much of that has stayed with me.
Tara proudly continues to progress her career in asset management, delivering for our customers every day and building on the legacy her father started. She also reflects on how having Tony as a supportive mentor has been important for her, as he champions her to strive as a female leader.
To now be working in the same network as my dad as woman in leadership, contributing to decisions and shaping the future of the business is something that means a great deal to me. It is a shared journey that makes both of us proud and reflects how the industry has evolved for the better.
We share a strong belief in developing the next generation (as he did with me), particularly encouraging more women into STEM and into our industry. That’s something we both care deeply about.
