    • Public event taking place on Monday 18 August.
    • Opportunity for residents and businesses to learn more about essential gas work in Hills Road, Cambridge.
    • The upgrade will involve replacing 1.4km of metallic gas pipes with tough plastic ones.

Residents and business owners in Cambridge are invited to attend a public event being held by Cadent, the UK’s largest gas distribution network, to learn more about essential gas works that are taking place in Hills Road.

The event will give everyone the opportunity to learn more about the necessity for the project and how the work will affect everyone on a day-to-day basis.

Between 12pm and 2pm on Monday 18 August, customer teams from Cadent will have a gazebo set up beside the Hills Road War Memorial close to the junction of Hills Road and Station Road in the city.

Work began on the scheme in June, where 400m of gas pipe, which ran underneath the pavement, was replaced in Station Road.

Work on phase two of the scheme is due to begin on Monday 11 August in Hills Road. This phase runs southbound to the start of the bus lane near the junction of Bateman Street. During these works, two-way traffic will remain in place, but the bus lane will have rolling closures in place (running around 100m at a time). Side roads that connect with Hills Road will also have some closures with diversions put in place.

Phase three is scheduled to begin in early October from the junction of Hills Road and Bateman Street, running south beyond the junction with Station Road. Temporary traffic lights will be in place, but again, two-way traffic will run as normal with no road closure. There will also be no work taking place between 8 November and 16 November.

The final phase of work, which will begin on 6 January 2026, continues along Hills Road from just past the junction with Station Road up to the railway bridge. There is not expected to be any traffic management in place for this phase of work.

Alongside the public event, Cadent also has a dedicated webpage providing weekly updates of what work has been completed. You can view this at https://cadentgas.com/major-projects/station-road-and-hills-road-cambridge

    Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy. We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change. Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency. Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

    Future of Gas:

Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
