Guildford Road, Chertsey

We’re upgrading the gas pipes along Guildford Road, Chertsey over the next 14 weeks from 19th January until 24th April 2026.

After the recent water-ingress incident on Guildford Road, we are now upgrading just over 900 metres of the gas pipes along Guildford Road from Bittams Lane to Salesian School.

These improvements will help reduce the need for future reactive repairs and ensure homes and businesses can receive a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.

    Traffic Management

Temporary traffic lights will be in place along Guildford Road, from Bittams Lane to Salesian School.

To minimise disruption, we’re working with Surrey County Council to coordinate our work with the A320 improvement scheme, sharing road space where possible.

To find out more about the A320 scheme benefits including associated temporary closures, please visit www.surreycc.gov.uk/a320improvements

During this time, please allow extra time for your journeys.

Pedestrian access will remain open throughout our work and access to homes and businesses will be maintained.

Our work to replace ageing gas mains is a major engineering project, which we’ve planned carefully with the local authority and where possible, we’ll use innovative methods and technology to minimise disruption and reduce the time taken to do this work.

In this case we are also working with Surrey County Council to coordinate our work with the A320 improvement scheme, sharing road space where possible.

We need to carry out our work during the day as we need access to properties to upgrade their gas service (that’s the smaller pipe that connects gas to their property). When we do this, we need to turn off their gas supply temporarily, test their gas appliances and turn their gas back on.

This is a common question we encounter; we’ve contacted the refuse companies to advise them of our work and we’ll work closely with them to ensure collections take place as normal on the dedicated day each week.

There may be times when the team isn’t visible on site during the allotted hours. Although it may appear that no one is working at the site itself, they’ll be working in surrounding roads to insert pipes, make connections and to carry out testing, as well as allow for concrete curing. It is only once we are satisfied that the new pipe is safely supplying gas to customers that we can fill in the holes and tidy up.

Yes, we will maintain access to properties for the duration of the works.

In most cases, we’ll need to turn off your gas supply on one or two separate days while we upgrade the smaller service pipe that connects to your property and the main gas pipe in the street.

Our team will let you know when your interruption will be 48 hours in advance. If you’re not home, we’ll leave a card with the dates on it.

Yes, we will endeavour to keep footpaths open as the majority of our pipes are in the carriageway.
