    Loss of gas - Chester 22 Jun 2024 6: 00 AM
    • It is not safe to turn your gas back on until we tell you to do so
    • All our engineers carry ID badges. Please check their ID before allowing anyone into your home

Residents in Hoylandswaine who have been off gas for more than 24hrs are entitled to compensation because Cadent have not been able to supply gas to their home or business.

You’ll be pleased to know you do not have to do anything. Once the incident is finally closed, we will send the relevant compensation payment for each household and business to your gas supplier. That’s the company you pay your gas bill. The name is at the top of your gas bill. It is up to the gas supplier how they pay this compensation to you, either directly or via your gas bill.

We will ensure the compensation is paid to the gas supplier within 20 working days, about four weeks. For further details look in the FAQ section of this page.

This is our final update, if you have any further questions please contact our gas enquiry line on 0800 389 8000.

We have now restored gas to all homes and businesses in Hoylandswaine.

We have visited every property and where people have been in, we have completed the safety checks and turned their gas supply back on.

If you weren’t in when we visited you the first time, don’t worry, we’ll have some engineers on site tomorrow too.

We would like to thank all the residents of Hoylandswaine who have been so patient and understanding whilst we’ve been dealing with the loss of gas supply to the village, due to thousands of litres of water in our gas main.

It has been a mammoth task and we haven’t been able to do it on our own. Thanks to Penistone Town Council, Barnsley Council, Northern Powergrid, The British Red Cross and finally Cadent’s engineers from across our networks.

    Thank you.

A very happy, warm and merry New Year from us all at Cadent.

Very good news. We only have 20 more properties to put back on gas this evening. This should be completed within the next hour or so.

We haven't been able to access a few homes, but we will continue to revisit those properties and we will have some engineers on site again tomorrow, to get those final few back on gas.

It's been a tremendous effort from everyone and a huge thank you to the residents of Hoylandswaine.

We are pleased to say that we have now put gas back into the network in Zones 6 & 7. Engineers will start to visit properties in each zone shortly to restore the gas supply to each home and business.

Zone 6 - BARNSLEY ROAD >266 and >321, HAIGH LANE >7 and >12, HALL TOP MEWS

Zone 7 - BARNSLEY ROAD 266> and 321>, HALL LANE, SKINPIT LANE, SYCAMORE LANE

Please DO NOT try to turn your own gas supply back on. Everyone should be back on gas within the next two hours if they are at home. Don’t worry if you are not home when we visit. We will return again and again until everyone has their gas back on.

We are nearly there. Thank you for your continued patience.

The electricity is back on in Church Drive!

Our engineers are completing the restoration of gas supplies in Zone 4 and 5. Please stay in if you can, we don't want to miss you.

We are putting gas back into the network in Zone 5 - HAIGH LANE 7>45 and 12>40, HALL FARM GROVE, HAMPER LANE, LOCKWOOD GARDENS, THE NOOK. Shortly, our engineers will be starting to knock on doors to residents in those streets to switch their gas supply back on.

Please DO NOT try to turn your own gas supply back on. Our engineers need to complete the safety checks first, before restoring the gas to each property.

We are aware that Church Drive is without electricity. The local electricity company GTC has been asked to attend and resolve the issue. We have extra resources in this street to restore the gas to the homes ASAP.

If anyone needs extra help please call us on 0800 389 8000.

Please DO NOT try to turn your own gas supply back on. A qualified gas engineer needs to complete the safety checks before safely restoring gas to each property. If you try to turn your own gas back on, you could end up with further problems. Please be patient and bear with us. We have enough engineers on site to get everyone back on gas today.

The snow delayed our start but we have engineers in site and we've started getting supplies back on in Zone 4 - CHURCH DRIVE, CHURCH HEIGHTS, CHURCH LANE, HAIGH HEAD ROAD, HAIGH LANE 47> and 42>, LOWER HAIGH HEAD, SWAINE MEADOW.

All we ask is that you are in when we call. As we do need access to complete the safety checks before switching your gas supply back on. If you are not home when we call, do not worry. We will visit again and again. We will try at least three times to turn your gas back on. After three visits, we will leave you our contact details and we'll wait for your call us, then we'll send out an engineer to safely switch your gas back on.

Cadent would also like to say a huge Thank You to the Red Cross, who have been checking on the most vulnerable people in the community. Their volunteers have been talking to these customers making sure they are warm and providing extra help when needed.

Good morning Hoylandswaine. Our plan this morning is to start to restore gas supplies in Zone 4: CHURCH DRIVE, CHURCH HEIGHTS, CHURCH LANE, HAIGH HEAD ROAD, HAIGH LANE 47> and 42>, LOWER HAIGH HEAD, SWAINE MEADOW.

You will appreciate that the weather is preventing some of our engineers from across South Yorkshire and the East Midlands getting to the village but we have been in touch with the council and asked for assistance. Our engineers are all trying to get to the village and we will start to restore your gas supply as soon as possible.

Please DO NOT try to turn your own gas supply back on, as gas may not be in that part of the network yet. Please wait for one of our engineers to safely turn your gas supply back on.

Last night we managed to restore gas to almost half the village and today we will continue to restore the gas as quickly as possible. All we ask is that you are at home, so we can get into your property to complete the necessary safety checks.

We have successfully visited Zones 1-3 this evening, turning the gas back on to the homes and busineses in the streets. As most people stop answering their door after 11pm, we have decided to start the restoration of the gas supplies to the remaining zones tomorrow morning.

Our engineers will be out in Zone 4 from 8am tomorrow and we will keep you updated when each of the remaining zones will be visited.

We will have 40 engineers on site again and we won’t be leaving until all homes and businesses have their gas supply restored.

If you are returning to work tomorrow or you aren't at home when we call, don’t worry. We will visit each property at least three times to try to restore the gas supply. After that, we will leave our contact details for you to call us when you return. Give us a quick call and we’ll send out an engineer to safely switch your gas back on.

We are prioritising the most vulnerable people, getting their gas back on as quickly as poosible and continuing with welfare checks for them until the end of the incident.

We do appreciate that it has been challenging to be without your gas supply for the last few days and we can only thank you again for your patience and understanding.

We are making good progress and we are starting to restore the gas supplies in Zone 3 – HIGHFIELDS, MEADOW VIEW, ST JOHNS and THE CROFT.

If you are not in when we first call, do not worry, we will visit your home again and again until we can get your gas back on.

Over 5,500 litres of water was pumped out of the gas pipe that feeds the village. Now the water has gone, we will complete our checks of the gas network in each zone before releasing it. Then our engineers can start switching gas supplies back on, in each street, in each zone.

This will take some time so please bear with us. We will work as late as we can but we know that people don’t answer the door after 11pm if not before. But don’t worry, we will be back out again tomorrow morning from 8am.

Cadent’s engineers have started to restore gas supplies to Zone 2 - CAWTHORNE VIEW, CHAPPELL CLOSE, CHAPPELL ROAD >9 and > 18, GREEN HILL GROVE, GREENSIDE, GREENSIDE GARDENS.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and patience.

Nearly 5,000 litres of water have been removed from the gas main so far and we are doubling our efforts with two tankers now pumping water from the pipe simultaneously.

Once the water has been removed from the gas pipes, we can start to turn your gas supply back on. Please DO NOT try to do this yourself.

Residents on the priority services register and those who have been identified to us as vulnerable, we will continue to carry out welfare checks. If you need any assistance please contact us on 0800 389 8000.

Please use your electricity wisely at this time.

Thank you for your continued patience. We aren’t able to give a time when we will start to restore the gas at this time but are doing everything we can to restore your gas supply as quickly and safely as possible.

John Duckworth, Cadent’s incident controller at Hoylandswaine explains the latest from site.

We are asking all residents to use their electricity wisely at this time. To prevent any further pressure on the electricity network in the area, we ask that residents only use one electric heater in a room and heat only one room at a time. We don’t want the most vulnerable in the area to be without gas and electricity.

    About your electricity supply:

Whilst we have been giving those most in need heaters, we would ask that everyone uses their electricity wisely.

We are working with the local electricity company to ensure supplies are not impacted too.

Please use your electricity supply wisely.

    Some advice:

    • Use the heaters sensibly to boost room temperature
    • Avoid using the electric heaters continuously – don’t use too many appliances all at once
    • Keep warm by staying in one room

Thank you for your patience whilst we continue to pump water out of the gas pipes in your village.

Last night, we successfully turned off the gas supplies to each home and business, who were in and our engineers worked through the night to continue to pump water out of the gas pipes.

We have 40 engineers and staff coming to the village this morning from around the East Midlands and South Yorkshire to help restore the gas supply. Once all the water is out of the pipes we will start to put gas back into the network and then revisit every home sand business to complete the necessary safety checks to switch your gas supply back on. We hope to be able to do this from this afternoon on wards.

We will continue to visit those on the priority services register today. If you know of anyone who needs that little bit of extra help, please get in touch with us on 0800 389 8000 and we’ll ensure someone visits them today.

We are hoping to visit everyone’s homes this evening to safely switch off their gas supply to each property. We are prioritising the most vulnerable customers first, offering them assistance if they require it. Our engineers will work late into the evening only stopping once people stop answering their door. Our engineers will resume this work in the morning from around 8am.

If you are on the priority services register(PSR) or are elderly, chronically ill or have children under the age of 5 years old, please contact us free on 0800 389 8000 and we will be able to offer some additional support whilst you have no gas.

This evening we are continuing to pump water out of our gas network. Once all of the water has been removed from the gas pipes we will be able to start revisiting each property to complete the necessary safety checks and turn the gas back on.

Our engineers are dealing with a loss of gas supplies to the village of Hoylandswaine near Barnsley. Our engineers are trying to find the cause of the incident and are working to get gas supplies back on as soon as possible.
