We’re working to increase the amount of low‑carbon biomethane safely supplied through our gas network.
We currently have 47 biomethane producers connected to our network. They have the capacity to produce enough biomethane to heat the equivalent of over 400,000 homes and we’re continuing to expand this.
To handle growing volumes of biomethane, we’re upgrading and adapting our network by:
To support this, we’ve introduced an ‘entry reinforcement assessment’ process. This allows us to group connection requests together so we can target upgrades where they’re needed most and help keep costs down.
We’re also using Ofgem‑funded innovation programmes to test new ideas that could reduce connection costs and increase our networks flexibility and capacity for biomethane.
Connecting a biomethane plant to the gas network has traditionally been complex, lengthy and expensive. We’re changing that by simplifying the process of connecting to our network making it clearer, faster and more transparent.
This includes:
Collaboration is key to unlocking the full potential of biomethane. We’re working closely with biomethane producers, government and policymakers, Ofgem and industry partners to share insights, contribute to policy and regulatory discussions, address challenges and develop practical solutions.
We publish our insights and thought leadership on how we see biomethane contributing to our decarbonisation and energy security ambition.
We’re a founding member of the Green Gas Taskforce, which campaigns for the growth of biomethane across the UK.
We believe biomethane will play an important role in the UK’s journey to net zero. Alongside hydrogen, it can help decarbonise our energy demand while making best use of existing gas infrastructure and skills.
By enabling more biomethane to connect to our network, we’re:
