More than 250,000 cubic metres of gas produced from renewable sources has entered Cadent’s gas network on a single day for the first time.
The UK’s biggest gas distribution network said the output, from 28 plants that turn food, sewage, manure and other wastes into grid-quality biomethane, was the equivalent to the domestic heating requirements of an area the size of Liverpool or Sheffield.
Cadent hailed it a major milestone in its drive to help increase the amount of renewable gas transported through its pipes.
Using more renewable gas will help the UK Government’s challenging 2050 targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing landfill waste, and meeting energy demand by sustainable sources.
Richard Court, head of regulation and external affairs at Cadent, said: This is a significant milestone and serves to illustrate the growth of green gas on our networks. The portfolio of biomethane plants connecting is continuing to grow, with a further eight due to be connected by March 2018.
The biomethane was introduced to the networks operated by Cadent, the company which keeps energy flowing to homes and businesses in North West and Eastern England, the Midlands and North London.
