    • Essential work on Stratford Road will help keep residents connected to safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating
    • The scheme involves replacing 900 metres of ageing gas main originally laid in the 1950’s
    • Work will take place in two phases over approximately 14 weeks, with two-way traffic lights in place throughout

Ageing gas pipes on Junction 16 of the M40 are being replaced by engineers from Cadent – the UK’s largest gas distribution network – as part of essential work to keep gas supplies safe and reliable for the local community.

The work involves replacing approximately 900 metres of gas main, originally laid in the 1950’s, which is nearing the end of its working life. Rather than carrying out ongoing repairs, engineers will replace the entire section with modern, durable plastic pipe designed to last for decades and future‑proof the local gas network.

The replacement work is taking place will be delivered in two phases.

Phase one is due to start on Monday 20 April and will last for around seven weeks, with phase two following immediately afterwards for a further seven weeks.

Each phase will see around 450 metres of ageing 6-inch gas main replaced with new polyethylene pipe, helping to reduce the risk of gas leaks and improve the efficiency and resilience of the network.

Following consultation with the local highway authority, the works will be carried out under two‑way traffic lights to allow engineers to work as safely as possible while maintaining access for residents, businesses and road users. Traffic management will be removed as soon as it is safe to do so.

Craig Chittem, Operations Manager at Cadent, said: This section of the gas network has served local customers well for more than 70 years, but it has reached the end of its operational life. By upgrading these pipes now, we’re helping to keep gas flowing safely and reliably to homes and businesses, both now and well into the future.

We know projects like this can cause some disruption, and we’d like to thank everyone for their patience while our engineers carry out this essential work as safely and efficiently as possible.

Gas will remain on throughout most of the project.

    Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy. We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change. Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency. Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

    Future of Gas:

Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
