Class acts: how a team of gas engineers saved a school thousands of pounds

helping our community

The head teacher of a Liverpool school gave top marks to a team from our North West network, describing them as ‘outstanding ambassadors’ for the company.

Delighted that our colleagues volunteered to help his Malvern Primary School in Huyton, Tony James also revealed that they’d saved him thousands of pounds.

Experts at keeping the local gas network operating safely, the Cadent team instead turned DIY decorators for a day, giving several rooms a makeover during the recent half-term holiday.

One of our contractors, Bagnalls Painting and Decorating Contractors, also joined us on the day. Completely free of charge, they repainted the car park markings - a much-needed, overdue task – and also joined in with room redecorations, as well as supplying all the paint and equipment.

“At a time when school budgets are so tight, and every penny counts, it was brilliant that the Cadent and Bagnalls teams came in to help us out,” Mr James said.

And in a tweet to publicly praise them, he added: “They have been absolutely fantastic – outstanding ambassadors for your wonderful company.

“Thank you so much for supporting our school community #TogetherStronger.”

Myles Jones, network supervisor, Operate and Maintain, rallied the troops after being asked by a local councillor (Colin Denver) if we could lend a hand.

“We’re working every day in this local community and it’s second-nature to want to help if we can,” said Myles. “It was just brilliant we could help redecorate rooms and repaint the car park – simple things really for us but it will make such a big difference for the school.”

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
