Cadent – formerly National Grid Gas Distribution –was selected as a finalist for ‘Innovation Product of the Year’ at the prestigious 2017 Gas Industry Awards, earlier today (9 May).

The Serviboost™ device was developed by staff at the company to tackle the problem of avoidable gas supply interruptions. They believe it could benefit at least 4,000 homes and businesses every year.

Martin Lord, Operations Portfolio Manager- Innovation, for Cadent, said: “We were delighted to have been selected as a finalist from so many high calibre entries. It is a tribute to the hard work of everyone involved.

“Our customers are at the heart of everything we do. Our job is to keep the energy flowing to them and we are constantly looking to new technology and innovation to achieve this.

“No current technology exists which offers the same applications as Serviboost™. It is a unique product which we believe could bring real benefits to our customers.”

Cadent’s project partners, Synthotech, designed the Serviboost™ product.

The device can be installed in a meter box. It boosts gas pressure within the service pipe – the pipe that takes gas into a building from the gas main in the road.

It ensures people continue to get enough gas even if there is a problem with the gas supply. For example, if their gas supply needs enlarging to cope with demand or where gas pressure is restricted by water or debris in the pipeline network.

The device has already undergone a series of field trials. The developers are refining it further before it begins its first ‘live’ trials.

The Gas Industry Awards 2017 were organised by the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM)and the Energy and Utilities Alliance (EUA). The  awards honour outstanding companies, individuals, products and best practice in the gas industry.

More than 600 attendees gathered at the Hilton Hotel in Park Lane to celebrate one of the largest and most prestigious events in the gas industry calendar.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
