Cadent restarts work from the 30 March in Benfleet for the next few phases of the project to replace the aging gas pipes with new more durable polyethylene pipes.

The next three phases in Benfleet will be completed during the school holidays, with a road closure in place to take advantage of the school being closed.  The work has been divided into sections, as before, to help reduce disruption in the area.

Kents Hill Road / Bowers Road, starts 30 March for two weeks
  • Two-way traffic lights on Kents Hill Road at the junction of Bowers Road.
  • Road closure on Bowers Road either side of the traffic light system from the junction of Gifford Road to the junction of Kents Hill Road and the junction of Kents Hill road to the junction of Felstead Road.
High Road/Essex Way, starts 30 March for two weeks
  • Two-way traffic light system on High Road and High Street, Benfleet at the junction of Essex Way.
  • Road closure on Essex Way at the junction of High Road.

Vicarage Hill (Junction High Road – Kings Hill), starts 15 April for three weeks
  • Road closure on Vicarage Hill from the junction of High Road to the junction of Kings Road.
Local MP Rebecca Harris said:
Cadent are continuing with the next phase of their £3.4 million investment into making the ageing gas mains network around Castle Point more resilient and future ready. A few summers ago we suffered a string of emergency gas works across the Borough and I made it clear Cadent need to invest more in the network to prevent it from happening again and these works should cut down on the chances of more emergency works on our main roads in the future.

“The key to this is planning and letting residents know in good time. I am pleased that Cadent sat down with the local Essex County Councillor around a table to plan the works and make sure every effort is made to keep traffic flowing around the Borough as much as possible while they take place.”

Essex County Councillor for South Benfleet said:
“There will be disruption for residents, but these works are necessary and I am grateful that Cadent have sat down with me and Essex Highways to plan them. I asked that the works are focused around the Easter holidays so as to not disrupt school runs. When all of the phases of this work are done we should see far fewer emergency road works for the gas network in the future so it will very much be worth it.”

The project started last year and will see an investment of around £3.4million in Benfleet and Canvey Island’s local pipe network over the next couple of years to ensure the network is ready to carry low-carbon gas, which is essential for the UK to achieve ‘net zero’ emissions by 2050.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
