  • Latest phase of five year programme to replace ageing gas mains in Thurrock gets underway
  • Project will help ensure local community keeps on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies into the 22nd century
  • Work will involve road closures in London Road
Cadent has begun the third phase of a major scheme to lay the future energy foundations of Thurrock in the form of tough new gas pipes which should last until the 22nd century.

Engineers today (Monday 9 March) began the latest phase of a five-year programme to install the new gas pipes in London Road.

To enable the work to be carried out safely and efficiently, a daily full road closure will be in place on London Road at the junction with Mill Lane, between 6am and 7pm. During the closure access will only be maintained for local buses, with a diversion in place along West Thurrock Way and Devonshire Road for other traffic. As the work progresses an additional closure will also be put in place in London Road at the junctions with The Chase and Gumley Road.

Local shops and businesses will remain open for business as usual throughout the project and gas supplies should be maintained.

The five-year programme gas mains renewal scheme got underway in 2018 and the current phase of work is due to be completed by the end of October 2020. Further phases of work which form part of the programme are expected to be scheduled in the future.

The new pipes will help ensure local people stay connected to safe and reliable gas supplies for heating and cooking for decades and also cut the number of repairs needed on ageing gas mains and associated disruption.

Project Manager Kevin Hatt said: “We’ll do all we can to deliver this essential work with as little disruption as possible.

“We’ve liaised with the local authorities to carefully plan and schedule this work.”

He added: “The tough new pipes we’re installing will reduce disruption caused by leaks from ageing pipes as well as help ensure local people keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies into the 22nd century.”

The scheme is part of Cadent’s ongoing investment across its network to help lay England’s future energy foundations.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
