Burton-on-Trent: Update on gas works on Union Street and Station Street

Teams upgrading a stretch of old underground gas pipes that help keep the energy flowing to thousands of homes and businesses in Burton-on-Trent have given an update on progress today.

Cadent, which manages the local gas network, is replacing over 1000 metres of century-old metallic pipe - which runs under Station Street, Union Street and Guild Street - over seven months, as part of a wider 5-year investment by Cadent in the East Midlands Network.

Now, the project leads have confirmed they expect to move onto phase 2 of the works from Tuesday 5 July. It will involve a temporary one-way road closure along Station Street and Borough Road to the train station for approximately 6 weeks. A diversion will be signposted. Vehicles will be allowed to travel from Union Street to the train station.

Please budget extra time for journeys, particularly at peak times, or consider using alternative routes.

Paul Patrick, Lead Delivery Engineer for Cadent in the East Midlands, said: “Work continues to upgrade our ageing metallic gas mains so that the energy continues to flow safely and reliably in Burton-on-Trent for years to come.

“The temporary traffic arrangements we have in place for the second phase are necessary to ensure the safety of our teams working in the road, as well as motorists and pedestrians as they navigate around our work area.

“We’ve worked closely with the local authority while planning this essential work to minimise disruption as much as possible but please budget extra time for your journeys, particularly at peak times. We’d like to thank everyone for their continued patience.”

Advance notice signs about the one-way closure and diversion are in place, and Cadent’s customer teams have sent out information to properties in the immediate area around the works.

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
