DIY Mission: Cadent volunteers help make a difference to one man's life

helping our community

One of Cadent’s volunteering efforts which has had the biggest impact involved many in the community helping out and had a beneficiary of one which makes it all the more special.
Carl Marshall, an army veteran in his 90s whose mice-infested and cold home in Glossop had fallen into disrepair was handed back his independence with the assistance of Cadent DIY volunteers.
Cadent got involved after a local pub landlord and other residents set up a Just Giving page to raise funds to help out the elderly resident.
Phil Burrows, Customer Service Manager and Smart Metering lead, said: “At first we provided a gas supply free of charge, which we did as part of the wider community initiative however as the operation swung into action, it became clear that conditions were worse than expected, with mice in the living room and the shower cubicle in danger of falling into the kitchen.
“We offered to support as part of Cadent’s volunteering scheme and our team helped get the customer’s possessions and furniture back into the property, made his outside space more pleasant with planters, dismantled a dangerous wall, hung curtains and cleaned. Cadent even paid for some plants and top soil to finish off the job”.
Reflecting on their hands on volunteering experience Phil commented: “The day was incredible and the team and I really enjoyed it. The sense of helping someone out and doing a good deed was overwhelming and knowing we’ve helped someone move back into their home to regain independence in a safe environment is a great feeling.
“Thanks, must also go to other members of the community who helped in the effort and to Cadent for allowing amazing schemes such as volunteering”.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
