Six week major gas pipe upgrade starts on Monday 14 August
  • Work will keep gas flowing to homes and businesses until the end of the century
  • Project is part of a £65 million investment in the West Midlands gas network this year
  • August will see the start of a vital major scheme to upgrade the gas mains in Dudley that will keep gas flowing to local homes and businesses until the end of the century.

In a six-week project local gas network Cadent will be renewing more than 700 metres of gas pipes in Stourbridge Road and Hilderic Crescent. Work is due to start on Monday 14 August. The existing iron mains will be replaced with tough, durable plastic pipes that will last at least 80 years.

To keep engineers and road users safe a temporary lane closure in Stourbridge Road will be necessary. This will mean that there will be single lane traffic for vehicles travelling towards Scotts Green Island. The lane closure in Stourbridge Road is due to be removed before the end of August.

Stephen Murray, who heads up Cadent’s gas mains replacement programme in the West Midlands region, said: “Our work is vital to keep energy flowing. This essential project is a significant investment to ensure that local people continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating. We appreciate this is a busy area and we have planned the project for the school summer holidays when traffic is usually lighter to help ensure that any disruption is reduced. We appreciate people’s patience and co-operation while we do this work.”

Traffic management arrangements have been planned and arranged with the local council.

The project is part of Cadent’s £65 million programme to renew 370kms of gas pipes in the West Midlands this year, ensuring gas supplies continue to reach 2 million homes and businesses in the region.

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
