- Modernising gas pipes that have been in operation for 60 years;
- Upgrade will future-proof the network, ready to carry hydrogen;
- Works will begin on 22nd January, and will last for 9 weeks.
Major works to replace 800 metres of gas pipes under Newark Road, Lincoln, which are essential to keeping homes in the area warm, will begin next week.
Cadent, which manages the local gas network, will be carrying out a project which will see gas mains being relaced in order to future proof the network and ready pipes for the introduction of hydrogen. The works will begin on Monday 22
nd January 2024, and will last for approximately 9 weeks, with an anticipated completion date of Sunday 24
th March, 2024.
Cadent engineers have ensured that gas stays ON during the works and that will remain the case.
24/7 3-way traffic signals will be in place throughout the works. When the works reach the junction of Tritton Road and Fosse Drive (at The Forum shopping centre), 3-way lights will only be used during off peak hours (9am to 3.30pm) apart from on days where complex works will be taking place. The traffic controls will be in place to maintain safety for road users, whilst Cadent engineers to carry out these essential works as safely, and as quickly as possible. Road users should expect delays to their journeys and are advised to allow additional time.
Ashley Behan, Street Works and Permitting Manager for Lincolnshire County Council, said: “These works have been carefully planned and will see Cadent working seven days a week to complete them as quickly as possible. There are a number of infrastructure improvement works throughout Lincoln scheduled for 2024, and LCC want to ensure this project is completed prior to the future works in the city.”
“It is appreciated that Cadent’s works will cause disruption, so we have requested that the Tritton Road and Fosse Drive junctions are completed between 9am and 3.30pm where possible, and the temporary lights will be manually controlled to aide traffic flow at all times during the working day.”

“With gas pipes being 60 years of age, it is essential that we replace them to futureproof our network and minimise the amount of repair work that we have to do in the area over the coming years. Keeping the people of Lincoln warm in their homes is our number one priority.
“We understand the frustrations that this will cause to road users and residents and we apologise for this. I’d urge everybody to allow a little bit more time for their journeys throughout the period of the works, and I’d like to thank everybody for their patience and understanding as our engineers complete these works safely and as swiftly as possible.”
