     Hybrid heating

    Our hybrid heating programme

Our hybrid heating programme offers an upgraded system to a small group of customers, to enable a new, lower emission means of heating their home.

As part of our Services Beyond the Meter programme we are working with our expert partners to install a hybrid heating system in identified customer homes, and learn from real life experience, in households where the current gas boiler is nearing the end of its life and is no longer efficient.

The programme is funded by Cadent and supported by our expert partners Worcester Bosch, TAGGAS, YES Energy Solutions and Guidehouse to provide a fully installed, intelligent, hybrid heating system.

This offers the potential to deliver energy savings and reduced carbon emissions* while improving home heating efficiency.

*A hybrid heat pump system when running emits less carbon dioxide compared to only using a gas or oil boiler.

    How does the programme work?

The programme is offered to an identified group of customers who may have inefficient homes, where their boiler is nearing its end of life, or in need of repair, and they meet other income criteria and personal conditions.

At the participating homes, our engineers will conduct a retro fit assessment and energy performance survey to see if any additional insulation measures are needed. The system is then fully installed within 1-2 days, with a smart heating thermostat, all supplied free of charge with a minimum 2-year warranty and technical support.

The participating customers will complete quarterly surveys to provide feedback and follow up discussions about their experience of using the system, so we can monitor and analyse the results. Customers will be invited to take part in sharing their experience of using hybrid heating at home.

What is a hybrid heating system?

A hybrid heating system combines two or more technologies including an air source heat pump with a gas boiler. The system automatically chooses the most efficient and cost-effective way to heat your home.

    How it works:
    • The heat pump provides most day-to-day heating using low carbon electricity.
    • Your gas boiler supports during colder weather or when you need extra heat or hot water.
    • The system switches automatically  you don’t need to do anything.
    • You can use the smart controller like a thermostat to control the temperature in your home.

    Benefits of hybrid heating

There are many benefits to this type of heating system, including:

    • Lower energy usage and a more energy efficient home – potentially meaning lower energy bills.
    • Smart, reliable heating to warm your home even during very cold weather.
    • An upgraded, modern system which enhances the lifetime of your home heating system.
    • Reduced carbon footprint by using less gas to heat your home.*
