Eliminating waste

Our goal is for zero avoidable waste to landfill by the end of 2022 and we have made great progress to date.

In 2021, we recycled and diverted over 96% of our general waste (excluding spoil from excavations). To build on this success, we are continuing to improve facilities for waste segregation at our depots and offices, ensuring all employees are playing their part.

We're doing this by reinforcing and embedding new recycling activities including safety barriers, signage and cones from street works. We are also engaging with suppliers to minimise packaging and other waste at source through our work linking them with the Supply Chain Sustainability School. We achieved Gold member status for the Sustainability  School in 2021 and have maintained that Gold status in 2022.

As well as reducing our waste we're ensuring that the resources we buy are used to their maximum. For example any left over yellow polyethylene pipe that we use to transport gas in is now recycled for use across our networks and supply chain, limiting the amount of new pipe we have to buy or dispose of.
