Winter fire safety

If you have a gas fire in the home, the chances are you’ll be using it much more frequently in the winter months to keep your house warm. As you may not have used your fire in some time and you’ll have it on much more often, here are some winter fire safety tips when it comes to how to winterise a gas fireplace:

    • Stains – Keep an eye out for soot or yellow-brown stains on the back of your fireplace. These sooty deposits could be a sign that your fireplace is not working properly.
    • Condensation –If excessive condensation appears on the windows of your room when the fire is on, there may be a fault with the fireplace.
    • Chimney – You should have your chimney or flue checked for blockages every year. This is vital to ensure all fumes can escape the fireplace.

As with any gas appliance, having an annual service carried out by a Gas Safe Registered Engineer is vitally important. This should help you avoid any major problems during the winter and give you peace of mind that your appliance is working as it should be and reduce the risk of a carbon monoxide leak.

Preparing your home for winter may not be something you’ve traditionally done every year, but it plays a vital role in keeping you safe and warm in the winter months. We have plenty of information available on our site to help you enjoy a warm and wonderful winter.
