Carbon Monoxide Alarm

    Preventing harm before it happens

Carbon monoxide (CO) safety starts with awareness, practical support and helping people take simple steps to protect themselves at home. We want every customer to understand the risks, know how to stay safe, and ensure those most at risk can access CO alarms and life-saving advice. And why we’ll continue to lead the industry in raising awareness of the dangers of CO.

Simple steps to help save lives

CO is a poisonous gas that you cannot see, smell or taste. Raising awareness is essential to help people recognise the dangers, understand the signs and symptoms of poisoning, and know what action to take if they suspect CO.

Through targeted education and early intervention, we help people make informed decisions that can protect lives and prevent avoidable harm.

We are keeping homes safer from carbon monoxide

Working with a range of partners, we’ll combine education, awareness and practical support to help customers understand CO risks and take action to stay safe.

    This includes:

    • CO awareness campaigns and safety education
    • Face-to-face safety conversations within communities
    • Free CO alarms for those most at risk and accessible alarms for customers who are deaf or hard of hearing
    • Our school and university learning programmes
    • Targeted support for vulnerable households.

    Delivering lasting impact

Our CO programme is designed to create a lasting behavioural change by ensuring people not only understand the risks but also know how to act. Through early intervention, community engagement and practical support, we’re helping to build safer, more resilient communities.

By increasing awareness, improving access to protection and targeting support where it is needed most, we can help reduce CO harm and ensure more customers stay safe in their homes.

We will continue to invest in CO awareness campaigns, CO investigations and practical customer support to ensure that CO safety remains at the heart of our commitment to protecting vulnerable customers and preventing harm before it happens.

    We will achieve this by:

    • Reaching millions of people through CO awareness and safety campaigns.
    • Delivering practical safety interventions that help reduce the risk of CO harm.
    • Supporting schools, youth groups and community organisations to increase CO awareness among children and families.
    • Providing free and accessible CO alarms to customers most at risk.
    • Measuring and evaluating the impact of our activities to ensure more people are likely to take positive safety action.

We’re committed to expanding the reach and impact of our CO safety activities. Our focus is on ensuring more people understand the dangers of carbon monoxide and have the tools and information they need to protect themselves and their families.

    In RIIO-3 we will:

    • Provide up to 500,000 free CO alarms to customers living in vulnerable situations and without the means to buy their own through our VCMA partnership organisations
    • Lead nationwide education and awareness campaigns reaching 5 million customers to reduce their risk of harm.
    • Educate 500,000 school children (KS1 and 2) and 200,000 university students on the dangers of CO.
