A spokesperson for Cadent's gas emergency service explained, Emergency works to repair a gas pipe close to the A1M, is continuing overnight tonight (06/09/26) with a complete road closure of the A1M from junction 9-7, near Stevenage from 10pm to 5am tomorrow morning (07/09/26).

Cadent's emergency engineers have been working closely with the local highways authority since Wednesday evening, to try to complete a repair without disrupting traffic. However, it was decided today that the safest and quickest solution is to complete the repair overnight with a road closure instead. The local highways authority will have a diversion in place. Please follow the signs.

By closing the A1M temporarily our engineers can safely complete the repair without any concerns or impact to traffic. The northbound hard shoulder will remain closed between junctions 9-7 throughout tomorrow.

There will be no impact to gas supplies whilst we complete the repair. However, you may smell gas in the area. If you smell gas and are concerned, please call the free national gas emergency service immediately on 0800 111 999*. The gas escape you smell may not be related to the work we are doing on the A1M.

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy. We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change. Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency. Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

    Future of Gas:

Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
