    • Essential engineering work in Felixstowe will help keep residents connected to safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.
    • The scheme involves replacing 1,100 metres of ageing gas pipe during a 17-week programme.
    • Customer teams will be available at a public information event from 12pm to 2pm on Friday 23 October.

Gas pipes in Garrison Lane and Chaucer Road, Felixstowe, are to be upgraded to new, durable plastic pipes which will future-proof the network for decades to come.

Cadent is set to replace 1,100 metres of ageing gas pipe in Felixstowe, helping to keep local homes and businesses connected to safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.

Residents and business owners are invited to find out more at a public information event between 12pm and 2pm on Friday 23 October. Cadent customer teams will be available on the corner of Valley Walk and Garrison Lane to answer questions about the work.

There is no need to book an appointment, just turn up and speak to the team.

Most of the work will take place in Garrison Lane, with additional work in Chaucer Road.

The project is part of Cadent’s ongoing investment to upgrade older gas mains across the East of England, replacing ageing pipes with modern plastic ones that are more durable and ready for the future.

Following consultation with Suffolk County Council, Cadent has agreed to carry out these essential gas works starting on Monday 19 October, with permits in place for 17 weeks until Sunday 21 February 2027.

Garrison Lane will be closed from 2 November with a number of other road closures in place as the scheme continues. These include*:

    • St Andrews Road: road closure from 9 November to 30 November, at the junction of Garrison Lane.
    • Valley Walk: road closure from 9 November to 30 November, at the junction of Garrison Lane.
    • Bridge Road: road closure from 9 November to 30 November, at the junction of Garrison Lane.
    • Cobbold Road: road closure from 16 November to 7 December, at the junction of Garrison Lane.
    • Newry Avenue: road closure from 23 November to 21 December, at the junction of Garrison Lane.
    • Princes Gardens: road closure from 23 November to 14 December, at the junction of Garrison Lane.
    • Mill Lane: road closure from 30 November to 23 December, at the junction of Garrison Lane.

A diversion route will be clearly displayed, and access will remain for residents living within the work area.

Amber Greensmith, Head of Customer Experience at Cadent, said: “The gas pipes in this part of Felixstowe have been working hard for many decades, but it’s now time to replace them so we can continue to deliver gas safely and reliably to homes and businesses.

We know roadworks can be frustrating, but we will do all we can to keep disruption to a minimum and our teams will be available at the information event to answer questions about the work.

This investment will help make sure the local gas network remains safe, reliable and ready to support the community for decades to come.

Gas supplies remain ON for the duration of work. The only interruption to supply will be to properties that take a direct feed from the pipes being replaced (in the immediate local area). Supply to these properties will be disconnected for a short while the property is connected to the new pipe. Advance notice will be given, and more information will be provided to these properties.

We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change. Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency. Future of Gas:

Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
