Gas pipes installed beneath Crookes, Sheffield, and surrounding roads to supply gas to the local community will soon be upgraded to continue serving future generations of Sheffield residents.
Major work to replace nearly 800 metres of gas pipes - equivalent to around eight football pitch lengths - is scheduled to commence on Monday 27 July and will last for approximately 20 weeks.
Cadent, which manages the local gas network, will be carrying out a project which will see gas mains being replaced in order to future proof the network and ready pipes for the introduction of more environmentally friendly gases, like biomethane.
For the safety of engineers and residents, and to minimise disruption, the project will be completed in phases, with traffic management measures in place throughout the works.
During phases where road closures are required, only one road will be closed at a time, with all work completed before moving on to the next road or junction.
Each phase is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete, including backfilling excavation sites. All work within a phase will be completed before progressing to the next section of the project to help reduce the impact on residents and road users.
Traffic lights will be in place and manually controlled between 9.30am and 3.30pm. Outside of these hours, the traffic management measures will be removed. Some stages of the project may also need to be carried out during evenings and weekends.
Two-way traffic lights and parking bay restrictions will be in place on Crookes between St Luke's Hospice and the junction with Marston Road. The junctions of Springvale Road, Toyne Street and Marston Road with Crookes will be closed.
Two-way traffic lights and parking bay restrictions will be in place on Crookes between Marston Road and the junction with School Road.
The junctions of Sackville Road and School Road with Crookes will be closed.
Two-way traffic lights and parking bay restrictions will be in place on Crookes between School Road and the junction with Coombe Road.
The junctions of School Lane and Coombe Road with Crookes will be closed.
Three-way traffic lights and parking bay restrictions will be in place on Crookes between Crookes Road and Lydgate Lane.
Please note – commencement dates of each phasing are subject to change if engineering difficulties occur.

With gas pipes being decades old, it is essential that we replace them to futureproof our network and minimise the amount of repair work that we have to do in the area over the coming years. Keeping the people of Crookes warm in their homes is our number one priority. You will be notified if your gas supply will need to be interrupted during our works, however if required, this will only be for a short period of time.
I understand that these works will cause inconvenience and frustration to residents and road users; this is understandable. However, we are doing all that we can to minimise disruption as we carry out these vital works and will continue to engage with the local community. I would urge everybody to allow for additional time in their journeys, and I want to thanks everyone for their patience and understanding as we seek to carry out the works as swiftly, but as safely as we can.
