We’ve developed a project to upgrade approximately 1,700 metres of ageing metal gas pipes along The Pound from the junction of Maidenhead Road to the junction of School Lane, including Terry’s Lane from 27 July until 4 October 2026.
Some of our gas network is over 100 years old and over the years there have been multiple repairs, resulting in extensive traffic management. This project will eliminate the need for recurrent repairs and also enhance the reliability of our gas network to ensure a reliable gas network for heating and cooking for decades to come.
To carry out our works safely and access our pipes, we’re carrying out these works in a number of phases with different traffic management requirements, which include road closures and temporary traffic lights.
Stuart Donaldson, Head of Investment Delivery explained, Over the years, there have been multiple repairs on these gas mains in Cookham, resulting in extensive traffic management measures each time. These frequent repairs have significantly disrupted the road, road users and the community.
After significant discussions with the local council and highways authority, we have developed this project to upgrade the gas pipe during the summer holidays when the traffic flows are reduced.
While this project will temporarily affect the area, it is designed to eliminate the need for recurrent repairs, thereby reducing traffic congestion and disruption.
Ultimately, this proactive approach will enhance the reliability of our gas network and ensure that we can keep our customers safe and warm long into the future.
All businesses will be open as usual during our works, please follow signposted diversions for access.
The Pound - 27 July to 16 August Closed from Terry’s Lane to Maidenhead Road - Junction closures on Terry’s Lane and Grange Road from The Pound.
Maidenhead Road - 27 July to 7 August - two-way traffic lights at the junction with Station Hill and outside of Appledown
Station Hill - 27 July to 7 August - two-way temporary traffic lights at the junction with Maidenhead Road
The Pound - 17 August to 2 September - multiple temporary traffic lights at the junctions with Terry’s Lane and School Lane
Terry’s Lane - 14 September to 4 October - Terry’s Lane closed from the junction of The Pound to the junction of Poundfield Lane.
During road closures access will be maintained for residents only. There will be no through road or turning points. Please plan extra time for your journeys and follow the diversions via Maidenhead Road and Sutton Road.
Whilst the Road closure is in place from 27 July - 16 August, there will still be a bus service through Cookham, but the bus will be on a diversion due to the closure. The diversion will take the bus down through Maidenhead then back up to towards Sutton Road, then will pass the High Street (Cookham) then back over the Cookham Bridge back on the usual route.
The bus stop by Cookham Train station will remain open, the bus stop opposite School Lane will be closed.

We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change. Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency. Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.
Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
