It's #PrideMonth and you may already have read the reflections shared by our colleague Chris Yates. Today, we introduce you to Amber Denman, one of our emergency dispatchers. If we need to get an engineer to your property quickly, it's Amber and the team who get the wheels in motion, fast. Amber is also a member of our Pride at Work community. This is what Pride Month means to Amber.
Celebrating who we are
Pride Month isn’t just about parades or parties, and it certainly isn’t about alienating the straight community or forcing our sexual orientation in people's faces. It’s about celebrating who we are and our right to exist without fear of persecution.
Some of my friends used to say, “If I support gay rights people will think I am gay”. I used to turn around to them and say, “I support animal rights too, do I look like an animal?”. Pride Month is about not having to be scared of who you are.
Happy to be me
Cadent has been a very welcoming company with my sexuality. I have worked at different places before where I was scared to say I was gay, scared to be myself. Here I’m happy to be gay in the workplace, happy to be me.
I want people to see that all people should be treated equally, regardless of who they are or who they love. One day we won’t have to “come out of the closet”, we’ll just say we are in love and that will be all that matters. It might be scary but true love is the strongest emotion and nothing can break that! Don’t ever be afraid to show off your true colours.
No one should ever be afraid to walk down the street holding the hand of the person they love. It takes courage to grow up and be who you really are.
