Hertfordshire: Vital project helps keep the gas flowing in Ware for decades to come

in your area

An essential project to replace over 1,000 metres of underground gas mains in Ware, Hertfordshire, started this week (25 July).

Cadent, which manages the local gas network, is replacing a section of decades-old metallic pipe along the A1170 Wadesmill Road, between Quincey Road and Kingsway.

It’s part of a wider investment by Cadent in the East of England’s gas network over the next five years and helps to get the network ready for a move away from fossil gasses to hydrogen, which is essential for a ‘net zero’ future. Cadent teams will complete the work over approximately twelve weeks.

Temporary traffic lights are in place along Wadesmill Road to create a safe space for our teams to work, as well as to help keep road users and pedestrians safe, as they navigate the work area. Please budget extra time for journeys, particularly at peak times or consider alternative routes.

Paul Angel, Lead Delivery Engineer for Cadent in the East of England, said: “We’re upgrading over 1,000 metres of pipe to help ensure the gas continues to flow to heat homes, schools, offices and other buildings in the area, as well as to future-proof the network ready for hydrogen.

“By using temporary traffic lights, we’re able to keep the road open while ensuring there’s a safe space for our teams to work and for the safety of road users, as well as pedestrians, to navigate our work area.

“We’ve planned our essential work in consultation with the local highways authority to minimise disruption as much as possible but please budget extra time for your journeys, particularly at peak times.”

Advance notice signs have been in place and Cadent’s customer teams have sent out information to properties in the immediate area around the works.

If you smell gas during this work, nearby or anywhere, always ring the national gas emergency service immediately, day or night, on 0800 111 999*. Do not delay or assume it’s related to this work. It may not be and must be checked.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
