Cadent, the UK’s largest gas distribution network, is proud to announce it has been named one of the Sector Leaders by GRESB for its industry leadership in 2025.

After a comprehensive assessment, Cadent achieved a maximum score of 100/100 and a 5-star rating for its environmental, social and governance performance.

GRESB, the leading global ESG benchmark for real assets, praised Cadent – which transports a third of all energy used in the UK, through its network of more than 80,000 miles of pipelines – for setting the pace for the industry.

Cadent has participated in the GRESB Infrastructure Assessment since 2019, steadily improving its performance year-on-year from an initial score of 66 per cent and four stars to this year’s perfect score and top-tier recognition.

Dave Garner, Director of Health and Safety at Cadent, said: The results demonstrate our commitment to corporate responsibility and operating our business in a sustainable way.

What makes these results more meaningful is the comprehensive nature of the GRESB assessment, which is based on a thorough examination of our business.

While we celebrate these outstanding results, they reinforce our commitment to continuous improvement and sustainable practices that integrate across the business.

We will evolve our Force for Good sustainability strategy as we move into the next RIIO price control period – we see it as a fundamental cornerstone to what we are here to deliver: keeping people warm whilst protecting the planet.

GRESB is one of three international rating agencies which assess Cadent’s ESG performance: Sustainalytics ranks it among the top 10 best-rated gas companies in the world (8th out of 83), and MSCI consistently reports Cadent as AAA rated.

Each year, GRESB assesses and benchmarks the performance of real assets worldwide, delivering trusted insights to financial markets on material performance factors that influence long-term value.

The GRESB Assessments are guided by what investors and the industry consider to be the most material issues in the performance of asset investments and are aligned with international reporting frameworks, goals and emerging regulations.

The GRESB rating is based on both score and quintile position, with the ‘5 Star’ rating awarded only to entities in the top 20 per cent of the benchmark. Cadent was assessed in the gas distribution network sector, for Europe.

The GRESB Sector Leader Awards recognises real estate and infrastructure companies, funds and assets that have demonstrated outstanding leadership within their peer groups. Cadent participated in the Infrastructure Assessment, obtaining ‘Class Leader’ and ‘Super Class Leader’ status.

These accolades reflect Cadent’s sector-leading performance across environmental initiatives (from biomethane to biodiversity), social programmes (including its award-winning support for customers in vulnerable situations), and governance excellence.

GRESB Sector Leaders exemplify success in action. They set the pace for the industry, translating strong governance and operational excellence into real-world performance and long-term value,” said Sebastien Roussotte, CEO of GRESB.

Since 2019, Cadent has published a Sustainability Report every year - the latest is here.
