The water and gas distribution sectors have a lot of common ground and similarities. They are both pipe networks which transport and supply essential fluid assets to consumers. Both networks face similar problems with leakage leading to loss of assets leading to increased bills for customers and environmental impacts. However, there are also differences between how the industries operate given the circular nature of water supply, their current methodologies for calculating leakage and the different physical properties of water and gas. Given the common ground between the industries there are many opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing to advance digitalization, leak detection and monitoring.
