We received a call on Thursday 11 September reporting that one of our gas pipes in a field off Heywood Road, near Diss, had been damaged by a third party.
Our team was dispatched to the site to assess the situation and make things safe. This included the introduction of an exclusion zone around the damaged pipe to ensure that the public are kept safe. The team have been carrying out emergency repair work since and are making excellent progress.
While there has been no interruption to the gas supply, sadly there is no ‘quick fix’ for this sort of job. Our engineers will be on site for a number of weeks using specialist equipment to ensure that the gas main is repaired.
Recently, we have seen an increase in the number of calls from the Diss area about a smell that people are concerned is natural gas. We want to reassure residents that our colleagues will investigate each report that we receive to ensure that there are no other gas leaks.
Our concern is that there may be isolated and/or unrelated gas leaks in the area which people may not report, thinking it is associated with our ongoing work.
That’s why it’s important to ring the gas emergency service on 0800 111 999 if you ever smell gas, suspect the presence of carbon monoxide or notice damage to gas pipes. Making the call immediately helps us keep everyone safe.

We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change. Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency. Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.
Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
