Cadent Gas will be carrying out essential emergency repairs to a gas main on Mereway, Northampton this weekend following the discovery of a gas leak.

The work will begin the afternoon of Saturday 27 September and is expected to be completed by Sunday 28 September.

This work is unrelated to the Queen Eleanor project currently underway in the area.

Due to the location of the gas main, to carry out the repairs safely, engineers will need to fully close and excavate the eastbound carriageway of Mereway. A clearly signed diversion route will be in place for road users.

    Access arrangements:

    • Emergency vehicles will be accommodated through the works wherever it is safe to do so.
    • Pedestrians will not be affected.
    • Public transport: Bus stops on the A45 slip road, and the nearest stops on London Road and Newport Pagnell Road, will be suspended for the duration of the works. Local bus operators have been notified, and passengers are advised to use alternative stops.

Rhys Phillips, Customer Operations Supervisor for Cadent said: We apologise for the disruption these emergency works will cause and thank road users, residents and businesses for their patience.

The repairs are vital to ensure the continued safety of the local community and to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply. Our engineers will be working as quickly and safely as possible to complete the work and reopen the road.

    Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy. We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change. Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency. Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

    Future of Gas:

Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
