Four weeks on from a third party damaging a gas main which runs under a field off Heywood Road, near Diss, work continues to repair the escape.
If you live locally, please be assured that Cadent engineers have taken action which ensures everything is safe. The repair requires meticulous and careful work, which takes time to complete.
While Cadent is managing the leak, a programme of work has been put in place to enable the replacement of the damaged section.
Given the location and size of the damage, there are numerous stages of work that need to be completed.
The first section of work requires a welding team to install tee points on the gas main so that a diversion pipe can be installed. Once this has been completed, a stopple – which is a specialised tool used to block the flow of gas – can be installed allowing gas to travel along a diversion pipe.
Engineers will then begin work commissioning a new bypass measuring 105 metres, which will take over the work of the damaged section of gas pipe. Finally, our team will isolate and replace the damaged pipe.
There remains no impact to customer supply.
We have continued to see calls coming in on the gas emergency service number, from the Diss area about a smell that people are concerned is natural gas. We want to reassure residents that our colleagues will investigate each report that we receive to ensure that there are no other gas leaks.
Our concern remains that there may be isolated and/or unrelated gas leaks in the area which people may not report, thinking it is associated with our ongoing work.
That’s why it’s important to ring the gas emergency service on 0800 111 999 if you ever smell gas, suspect the presence of carbon monoxide or notice damage to gas pipes. Making the call immediately helps us keep everyone safe.
Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy. We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change. Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency. Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.
Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
