    • Essential work in Witham will help keep residents connected to safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating
    • The upgrade includes 1600m of ageing gas pipe being replaced with tough new ones
    • Work to be completed by Wednesday 15 October

Work to replace ageing gas pipes in Witham, Essex, is coming to an end with the project entering its final stages.

The planned activity, which started in July, involves the decommissioning of the current metallic gas pipes – which measure over 1600m in length and were originally installed in the 1960s- and installing tough new pipes which will last for decades, future proofing the Witham network.

The final section of work taking place is at the northern end of Avenue Road at the junction with Collingwood Road. This work will see around 150m of gas pipe being replaced.

Work has already been completed in The Avenue, Avenue Road, Collingwood Road, Guithavon Valley, Guithavon Road, Mill Lane, Colchester Road, and Freebornes Road.

Cadent Project Manager, Gavin Stuart, said: We have a responsibility to make sure every property that uses gas has access to it 24/7, 365 days a year and these essential works will mean that we continue to deliver on that promise.

We are very conscious of the disruption roadworks cause and hope people understand these are necessary and essential works, to ensure everyone’s safety and maintain a reliable gas supply.

We will continue to be in regular contact with the Highways Authority to keep them updated on our work which we will have completed by Wednesday 15 October.

While this section of work is coming to an end, further work is being scheduled to take place in Guithavon Avenue and Guithavon Street between 5 and 25 January 2026*.

    Future of Gas:

Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
