    19:30 update

Gas emergency engineers from Cadent are continuing their work this evening to stop the gas escape on the A45, Coventry Road, near Damsonwood.

For safety reasons, a full road closure on the A45, Coventry Road from the junction of Damson Parkway to Glencroft Road will remain in place until the gas escape has been stopped.

We expect this section of the road to remain closed until early tomorrow morning.

A Cadent spokesperson said: We are working closely with the emergency services and local authority to complete this emergency work as safely and quickly as possible.

We hope to stop the gas escaping by the early hours of Tuesday morning.

We are working carefully to ensure we don’t disrupt any gas supplies to the local area too.

By tomorrow morning, we will start on the repair of the gas pipe. We are working with the local highways authority to plan the traffic management needed to safely complete the repair. We hope to be able to open one lane of the A45 in both directions tomorrow, however, lane closures will remain in place for the safety of road users and our engineers.

We understand this emergency repair work is causing disruption in the area, but we must take these precautions to keep everyone safe.

    Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy. We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change. Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency. Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

    Future of Gas:

Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
