- Cadent to install new gas infrastructure in historic Canonbury district
- People can find out more about the essential work at a drop-in event to be held on Wednesday 17 October between 4pm and 7pm in Canonbury Square
- The project is part of Cadent’s essential gas mains replacement programme in the capital
Cadent is inviting people to find out more about the new chapter it will be writing in Islington’s historic Canonbury district.
The essential work will involve replacing ageing gas mains with tough new pipes between Highbury Corner and Canonbury Road in Islington. New gas infrastructure will also be installed in Canonbury Square.
The project will help ensure local homes, community facilities and businesses keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating for many decades to come.
Cadent will be holding a drop-in public information event in a marquee in Canonbury Square on Wednesday 17 October between 4pm and 7pm. People can drop by and find out more about the proposed project and give feedback to help develop the plans.
The project represents an exciting new chapter in the history of an area which boasts some impressive literary credentials. Authors George Orwell and Evelyn Waugh were onetime residents of Canonbury Square. Novelist Charles Dickens meanwhile set one of his Christmas stories ‘The Lamplighter’ in nearby Canonbury Tower, while novelist Jane Austen’s ancestors are also said to have lived in the area.
Cadent Construction Manager Stuart Donaldson said: “Cadent is writing a new chapter in the history of Canonbury with this project which will help ensure the local community keeps on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies for decades to come.”
“We’ll be presenting our plans for the project at the drop-in event and I’d encourage people to come along if they would like to find out more about the project, ask questions about the work or give feedback.”
The project is being planned in close discussion and co-ordination with Transport for London and the London Borough of Islington.
Mr Donaldson added: “Cadent is doing all it can to ensure the work is delivered with as little disruption as possible.”
“Throughout the work, all shops and businesses will be open as usual, access will be maintained for residents and businesses and clearly signed routes will be open for pedestrians.”
People with queries about the work can also contact the project’s Community Relations Team on 0800 389 8261 or send an email to info@communityrelations.co.uk.
This work is part of Cadent’s investment in replacing and upgrading the gas mains in London with safer and more durable modern pipes. This programme will reduce the amount of unplanned repair work to ageing gas pipes on the network and is an essential in helping to ensure people keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies.
