- Cadent Apprentice Remon Miah outlines his role in keeping Londoners connected to safe and reliable gas supplies
- The 22-year-old has already won two awards in his career
- Cadent offers exciting apprenticeships and other career opportunities
The recent cold snap has been a timely reminder of the importance of having access to safe and reliable energy supplies for cooking and heating.
At the age of 22, Remon Miah has an important role to play in this story as an Operate and Maintain Apprentice for Britain’s largest gas distribution company Cadent.
With National Apprenticeship Week putting apprenticeships in the limelight, Remon has shared some of his experiences working for Cadent.
Currently based at the company’s Barnet Depot, Remon plays an important role in looking after gas infrastructure on Cadent’s North London network, which includes high profile locations such as the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and Canary Wharf.
He started his apprenticeship in 2014 having previously studied engineering at college. Remon found he enjoyed learning practically rather than just theoretically and decided to pursue an apprenticeship instead of going to university.
Remon recalled: “I looked at various apprenticeship options and realized that Cadent was the best choice for me.
“It offered an excellent balance of classroom and onsite learning as well as good pay.”
One challenge in the early days was the reaction of his Bangladeshi family to his career choice.
Remon recollected: “My family and culture are very protective and it took a lot of convincing my parents to allow me to do take up apprenticeship which would involve a lot of travel and time away from home.
“However they soon understood what an amazing opportunity this was for me and showered me with support.”
The family support was well placed as so far during his apprenticeship Remon has won both an Engineering Apprentice Award from West Cheshire College and Cadent’s Outstanding Apprentice Award.
Remon’s training package has included everything from cable testing to the maintenance of control systems.
He’s expected to complete his apprenticeship later this year and after that will become a fully-fledged Pressure Control operative, helping ensure that Cadent’s network of over 20,000km of pipes in the region are operating at the right pressures.
Outside of work Remon, who lives in Camden, enjoys life’s simple pleasures such as going out with family and friends.
Reflecting on his career path so far Remon, said: “My job involves big responsibilities, teamwork and playing an important role in society helping to keep people supplied with safe and reliable energy.
“Cadent attracts all kinds of people from a wide variety of backgrounds and I’d encourage anyone thinking about a career to check us out.”
Cadent is Britain’s largest gas distribution company, distributing gas to approximately 11 million homes and businesses – which equates to half of the country,
In addition to Operate and Maintain, Cadent also offers apprenticeships in Repair Support and Emergency Response.
