- Cadent is about to begin next phase of essential gas mains replacement work in Fulham Road
- To enable work to be carried out a westbound lane closure is planned from mid-June to late July 2018
- Project will help keep local residents connected to safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating
Cadent engineers are preparing to start work on the next phase of an essential project to help keep Chelsea residents connected to safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.
Work to replace ageing gas mains in Fulham Road, between Elm Park Gardens and Brompton Road, is due to start on Tuesday 8 May, with temporary two-way traffic lights.
To enable the work to be carried out safely a westbound road closure will be implemented from mid-June for six weeks until the end of July 2018. A diversion will be in place which will involve turning left into Sydney Street, right onto King’s Road, right onto old Church Street and then left back into Fulham Road.
Once this closure is lifted the remainder of the work will be completed using temporary two-way traffic lights. It is scheduled to be completed by late August 2018.
Cadent Engineering Manager Stuart Donaldson said: “We’ve carefully planned the project to make sure our work has as little impact on people who work, live or travel through the area as possible.
“The project has been planned in close discussion with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, TfL (Transport for London) traffic management and buses, the emergency services and Royal Brompton Hospital. Throughout the work all shops and businesses will be open as usual and it will not affect your gas supply.”
He added: “Our work will help ensure local people remain connected to safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating and it will also reduce the number of disruptive unplanned repair jobs required on ageing gas mains.”
Anyone with questions about the work can contact the project Community Relations Team on 0800 389 8261 or email

Once this phase of work is completed the plan is to continue replacing pipe on Fulham Road up to the junction with Egerton Gardens and South Terrace. This work is expected to take place from late August until October 2018, further details about this work will be provided in the future.
The project is part of Cadent’s investment to replace and upgrade the gas mains in London with safer and more durable modern pipes. This work will help ensure London enjoys a 21st century infrastructure network and remains one of the world’s leading cities.
