corporate

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the free National Gas Emergency Service number: 0800 111 999*.

This is an important milestone as we are proud operate this one central number on behalf of the gas industry, which serves the whole of the UK.

Providing a reliable service, our customer care handlers are only a phone call away, free and available 24/7, 365 days a year – supporting thousands of people every day to stay safe reporting gas leaks and suspicions of carbon monoxide. In 2020 we received 1.42 million calls to the number.

Where it all began
Launched in Trafalgar Square, the number was introduced in 1996 when the Gas Safety (management) Regulations were implemented. At the time moving from regional dispatch centres to four new centres at Brentwood, Gloucester, Hinckley and Newcastle.

When the four gas distribution networks were created in the early 2000's, Hinckley in Leicestershire became the main contact centre for the whole of the UK, providing the service for all the gas distribution network companies: SGN, Wales & West Utilities and Northern Gas Networks.

"Absolutely fantastic to celebrate 25 years of the UK Gas Emergency Service. I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our colleagues whom are here 24/7, 365 days a year, dedicated to keeping our customers safe and warm." said Dan Adcock, Director of Customer Experience

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
