The gas industry over the past 70 years

The gas industry has been around for more than 200 years but in the past 70 years, it has changed considerably.  If we look back to 1952 when Princess Elizabeth became Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the gas we used, ‘town gas’, was made from coal, produced by the regional gas boards around the country.

It wasn’t until natural gas was found in the North Sea in 1960, that we started to see some real changes in the gas industry. The conversion of ‘town gas’ to ‘natural gas’ from 1967 to 1977, was a significant milestone in the story of gas and we saw the centralisation of the gas industry, the creation of British Gas Corporation in 1972 and privatisation.

The gas has stayed the same, but the gas companies have changed.  They have merged and divided and in 2017 Cadent was announced, becoming the largest gas distribution company in the U.K., with over 11 million customers and providing the national gas emergency service.

Just one year later, we started work on our hydrogen projects, with the hydrogen blending project at Keele University launching in 2018 and the blended 20% hydrogen gas and 80% methane gas, flowing into homes for the first time in the U.K. in 2019.

In the next few years, we will see the next significant change in the gas industry, where we will see the conversion of methane gas, to blended gas to 100% hydrogen gas, as we work toward a low carbon future.

Gas safety over the long Bank Holiday weekend

Our gas emergency teams will be working around the clock to ensure we can help you if you have a gas emergency over the long Bank Holiday weekend.  Whether you are having as street party or just enjoying your time off, we will be there if you need us due to a smell gas or suspect a carbon monoxide.

In London specifically, we have engineers on motorbikes ready to weave through the traffic to deal with any gas emergencies.  During the next four days for the various events around Buckingham Palace, we will have engineers strategically placed to ensure we can deal with any gas escape and ensure people’s safety and everyone can continue to enjoy the various Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Have a safe and fun Platinum Jubilee weekend.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
