Gerry, 89, keeps our Warrington depot shipshape

working for us

This is Gerry. He’s 89 years old – and a big part of our team based in Warrington.

One of the nicest, friendliest, chattiest people you’re ever likely to meet, you could say Gerry knows a thing or two about keeping things shipshape…

For almost two decades, he worked as a steward on cruise ships – luxury liners, like the QE2, which set sail from Liverpool to destinations worldwide.

Gerry looked after everyone on board - from the rich and famous, to the less well-known traveller, to thousands of soldiers heading off to war in Korea.

Over the years, passenger lists included superstars like Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Jerry Lewis, and Judy Garland, while among his fellow crew was a political powerhouse in-the-making, former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.

He ‘waved’ goodbye to life at sea in late 1960s, when he got a job on land as a driver for Fords Motor Company in Halewood.

Gerry joined the Cadent family when he was a young 71 years of age.

He’s the cleaner of our depot in Winwick Road, Warrington. There has been lots of change on that site (including a new depot building constructed in recent years), as well as lots of new faces. Gerry, though, has been the constant throughout.

Never a day goes by without Gerry welcoming our team with a smile that’s as wide as the nearby Mersey, nor without him sharing a joke or story from an amazing working career that started just after the Second World War.

A father of seven and grandfather to 17, he’s an absolute character and a friend of everyone here at Cadent, for life.

He’s retiring later this month because of a few health issues. He’d carry on if he could.

We’re looking forward to a good official send-off, very much with the hope and expectation that he’ll keep in touch with us, his Cadent family.

Phil Hendrick, Customer Operations Area Manager, based at Warrington, said: “Gerry’s just brilliant. He’s always there to lighten the mood, have a laugh and keep us smiling.

"To have worked to the age of 89 is something else. We’ll be sad to see him go, but he knows the doors are always open if he’s popping by.”

“The people here are brilliant,” Gerry said.

“There will be tears the day I leave. Of all the people I have known in my life, I think these are the nicest guys I have ever known.”

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.

Cadent manages the national gas emergency service free phone line on behalf of the gas industry - 0800 111 999*
